As Winter Storms Pummel America, Experts Warn of Health Hazards Involved in Shoveling Snow.

As the winter storm season has intensified around the United States, doctors and other experts have warned that the intense physical exertion associated with shoveling snow can pose serious risks of injury to US citizens, especially older adults.

Typically, injuries related to snow shoveling fall into two categories: (1)orthopedic injuries, especially back, knee and shoulder injuries; and (2)another, potentially fatal category, namely heart problems.

According to John Harold, president of the American College of Cardiology, adults with coronary heart disease, smokers, people with high blood pressure, and people with a family history of heart disease are among those at high risk of suffering a heart problem while shoveling snow.  Harold noted that more heart attacks occur in the US during the winter months than in the summer, and he stated that adults who have a high risk for heart problems should be particularly cautious with the snow and should consider hiring someone else to shovel snow for them.

Snow shoveling injuries are a serious problem in the United States.  In 2012 alone, 34,200 people went to emergency rooms for snow removal related injuries.  In addition, the Washington Post reported that at least three adult men were found dead outside their homes, all of whom are believed to have suffered fatal injuries while shoveling snow.
