Drivers are at a higher risk of car accident crashes during the winter months. With icy roadways, and distracting snow, accidents are bound to happen. That is why Massachusetts drivers are expected to operate motor vehicles with a heightened level of care when winter conditions make driving more dangerous. Some accidents, however, may be unavoidable.
An officer in Delaware County, Pennsylvania experienced one of those unavoidable accidents recently. The officer was en route to a house fire early last Wednesday morning. The blaze had broken out shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Washington Avenue in Media, Pennsylvania. By the time the fire department arrived, the second and third floors were engulfed in flames, and the fire was spreading rapidly to a neighboring house. Although residents managed to get out of the house uninjured, the police officer on his way to the scene was not so lucky.
The police officer was traveling in his police cruiser to the scene of the fire when he became the victim of a single-car crash. Icy roads are thought to have been a contributing factor to the crash. The officer was transported to a local hospital to be treated for back injuries.
